conférence :" Eduscapes: Toward a methodological and theoretical concept for understanding the links between transnational migration and education (Senegal)"
Le Lamc est heureux de vous annoncer la conférence d’Anneke Newman (ULB - LAMC) qui présentera Eduscapes: Toward a methodological and theoretical concept for understanding the links between transnational migration and education (Senegal) le vendredi 16 mars à 14h dans la salle Doucy.
This paper analyses the influences of transnational migration on young men’s educational aspirations and trajectories in northern Senegal, a strongly Islamic context characterised by high levels of male emigration. Whether they attended long-term full-time Qur’anic schooling, dropped out of state schooling after primary, or invested in secondary school diplomas, young men’s aspirations were all strongly influenced by the fact that the migrant was the principal role model for male success. Drawing on this empirical data, I develop the concept of ‘eduscapes’ and explain its potential as a methodological and theoretical approach for understanding educational decision-making and trajectories in transnational contexts.
